Thus book was really slow for the first 100 pages, but after that it was impossible to put down. 4 stars because it's ridiculously heartbreaking.

Compelling and timeless story of oppression, immigration and the walls we face and subsequently place around us. The story zips along like the oceanliner crossing the Atlantic that becomes a focal point. While some plot points are unnecessarily implausible, the book nonetheless forces us to confront the cyclical depravity of man.
"Does man have a God problem, or does God have a man problem?"

Developed characters, inter-generational connections, WWII inspired by nugget of history, invoking sadness and despair but ends with hope and resilience.

I often think of a book by the way it makes me feel. I honestly picked this up wondering if I was getting tired of all the WWII inspired novels I've read or considered reading lately. Even though this seems like a well-worn path, quite quickly you find the characters and events were removed from Europe. The characters are still deeply impacted though they might be considered 'lucky' to be survivors.

I found myself drawn into their desolation but I liked how their was hope at the end with new generations.

This was such a great book! The hook captivated me the moment I opened it. It was a little slow at first, but definitely a powerful, emotional, and sweet novel. I liked how it was written from 2 perspectives of 12 year old girls, but in different time periods. Definitely a good read.

Correa brings to life a sad incident in an ocean of sad incidents with this fictional story of Hannah - one of the few survivors of the St. Louis. The ship was dispatched to Cuba with almost 900 Jewish Germans in 1939. During the two week crossing, politics in Cuba changed and the refugees were refused entry into Cuba - and the United States and Canada. The St. Louis was sent back to Europe where the vast majority of passengers ultimately died. Cuba did allow about 30 passengers to enter. Wealthy Hannah was among the lucky few. The story bounces back and forth between 1939 12-year- old Hannah and 2014 12-year-old Anna - Hannah's great niece. Anna uncovers her deceased father's origins when she and her mom visit Cuba. Fans of historical fiction will enjoy this as long as they don't require tons of happiness. A good reminder of the consequences of refusing to assist refugees. To be published in October 2016.
