For fans of rampant fatphobia and predictable plots. Hated it!

Picture this: your artist husband calls you, weirdly confesses to killing someone, and then turns up dead in a river. He’s been renting a room at a sketchy AF, rundown, long-term rental motel to use as a studio space, so you move in temporarily to try to find out what happened. You mingle with the other tenants to pick up gossip — including Cass, who’s recently been kicked out of her house by her cheating long-term boyfriend and is working as the motel maintenance person (and extorting shitty dudes for money) … and then you start getting threatening letters and things get extra crazy.

I loved this — never a boring moment, with a great cast of eclectic, funny, interesting characters (omg the POOL GIRLS!), and so many twists and turns and surprises — I truly had no idea what was going to happen, which is a real feat when I’m reading a thriller!

Highly recommended for anyone looking for a fast-paced, exciting thriller with a little side of snark.

* Huge thanks to the author, Thriller Book Lovers Promotions, and Graydon House for the chance to read and review this super early! The Vacancy in Room 10 publishes April 9, 2024.

Anna’s husband has committed suicide. At least that’s what she believes. But his death is a mystery, part of his life unknown to her. So she goes to try and figure it out. His studio is in a ratty motel turned apartment. The people who live there…interesting. Cass is the lady to runs the apartments by doing maintenance and getting free rent. She’s mysterious and Anna feels like she’s hiding something. But Anna starts to receive notes that hint at danger and she must decide if truth or her own personal safety is more important.

The beginning was a little slow, it picked up at the end.

This book started off very slow for me and it didn't pick up until more than halfway through. It took me a lot longer to read then normal. I just didn't connect with the characters at first. When the story finally picked up, I enjoyed it more and it had a satisfying conclusion. It was just an average read for me but some of the characters I did end up enjoying.

3.5 for the audiobook. This was fun and entertaining. I am a sucker for motel, hotel, apartment settings. i also like underdogs and. down and out characters and this is full of those. I couldn’t give it a 4 because the story was a little silly and over the top. But it works if you are ready to suspend disbelief and just go with it.
