Just completely delightful! Spot on about librarians and our job in the world. ❤
An ode to books, libraries and the magic of hope they offer to weary souls and despairing travellers.
Short and sweet and very very cute. Alix E Harrow does magic well.

Best story was "A Witch's Guide to Escape by Alix E. Harrow" which I read in Vol 13 of Strahan's Year' Best SF & F.
A Witch’s Guide to Escape: A Practical Compendium of Portal Fantasies- Alix E Harrow.
So this author takes requests now? I mean she must have to write a short story about a librarian witch.
Harrow's 5 star reputation continues with me and I can't get enough.

La guia de las brujas ha sido un relato maravilloso, perfecto para cualquier fan de los libros y de la fantasia, o para todo aquel que su profesión ideal sea la de bibliotecaria
This was beautiful and I'm trying not to cry in the used book store I work at.

I'm listing this as a kindle freebie because you can read it here.
Shout to C who told me to read this.
My preferred state is reading. I share a house. My bedroom is library with a place to sleep.
Books are my safe place. Always have been.
Alix E. Harrow's brilliant, wonderful, glorious, heart breaking short story is about the power of books and the ability books have to move us and save us.
And how forcing people to read X is the wrong way to go.
Just read it, okay?

This one I will re-read before I make too many comments on it. I mostly loved it, thought the writing was excellent, underlined a ton of pithy, wise comments about books and magic, but I also want to interrogate some of its assumptions. I feel this way about my chosen librarian profession at times, too.
I received this story as part of the 2019 Hugo Voters Packet.
