A once, and somewhat still, controversial look at the rituals and beliefs of Traditional Witchcraft circa the 1970's. The book is both informative and revealing, but I was ultimately unimpressed with it as a whole.

This is a comprehensive guide that provides a wealth of knowledge about various aspects of modern witchcraft. It covers topics such as the Sabbats, casting and banishing the magic circle, the Book of Shadows, initiation and consecration rites, spells, tools used in witchcraft, and much more.

I found this book to be a fascinating and informative overview of Wiccan culture. This book provided a comprehensive look into the beliefs and practices of modern witchcraft, making it an enjoyable and educational read. It covered a wide range of topics related to Wicca, offering valuable insights into the rituals, tools, and traditions associated with this spiritual path. Overall, I found it to be an engaging resource that expanded my understanding of Wiccan culture.

honestly, this book just freaked me out when i read it a while ago. it’s got good information but i don’t recommend it if you’re starting out.

A couple of interesting points, but does not appear to reflect modern Wiccan practice.

Talks a lot about male and female working partnerships (great for those who this works for, but they make it sound like a requirement. What about LGBTQ practitioners)? There was also very little talk about practical magic as it was all focused on tradition.

Fantastic book that gives the reader great insight into BTW Craft. This book is a must read for anyone studying Wicca.

Great for obtaining information on the history of Wicca and how we got to the place we are, but very outdated in both theory and modern practice for all but the most traditional of British Traditional Wiccans.

Gender is a social construct. Not embraced by the Farrars.

Found in a charity shop and clearly I wasn’t about to leave it there. Once upon a time (meaning pre-Internet), this must have been a wonderful resource to stumble across. By now, however, it’s showing it’s age in terms of everything from its decidedly antediluvian attitudes to LGBTQ people to the literal take on the “burning times” to the detailed opinions on absolutely everything...It’s easy to forget in the midst of Weinstein, Trump, Farage et al that a lot of social norms from the 80s have genuinely changed. Anyway, it is what it is, many people took a great deal from it and I suspect the Farrars would write a very different book where they to tackle this again.
