I don’t normally write reviews, but I felt this book was being undersold and unfairly discouraged, so I’ll keep it short and sweet.

This book is easy to put down, but the story told is surreal, heart-wrenching, and human. Three beautiful, love/loss-filled tales woven together throughout the span of a century. Each character carried with it the themes of the never-ending search for what was lost or desired, the desire for human connection, the depth of love and despair, and so much more.

part 1 was strange and fairly tedious, part 2 was so strange and disgusting I almost stopped reading, but part 3 redeemed all

I really wanted to like this book more. I may be done with Yann Martel.

Full of weird symbolism, this book is not for those who seek a thrilling journey in historical settings. There were parts which were beautiful and heart wrenching but the overall meaning is left for the reader to figure out away from the actual pages of this novel, because there they won't find much. Musings on generational divides, technology, religion and mystery and hardships of people in rural villages are the main themes and if you want to meditate on these topics, then this book is great. Otherwise, it's a bit of a jumble. There is a mysterious-magical strain in the storyline so don't expect a realistic story.

I don't know how I feel about this book.

I loved reading this book with the wonderful descriptions of life in the high mountains of Portugal as seen from several very different perspectives. Lost love is the theme along with a fascination with our chimpanzee ancestors. The coincidences which drive the plot became too much for me at the end. Endings seem to be a challenge.

Weird. Didn't get it. Life of Pi is one of my all time favorites, I guess it's hard to live up to it. The ending really made me mad, kind of shocking and sad and weird at the same time. If nothing else I brushed up on my Portuguese (be prepared for intermittent translation).
