On Monday when I created a bracket of Caldecott medalists, the ranking of this book bummed me out the hardest. For reference my ranking formula is as follows: (average GR rating * number of GR ratings * number of copies owned by my library) - (base racism penalty * number of copies owned by my library) + medal year. The scores ranged from over 35,000,000 ([b:Where the Wild Things Are|19543|Where the Wild Things Are|Maurice Sendak|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1384434560l/19543._SX50_.jpg|3020535]) to -20,000 ([b:Mei Li|2186644|Mei Li|Thomas Handforth|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1215747471l/2186644._SX50_.jpg|2192346]).
Despite taking a HEAVY racism penalty, this book still ended up with a score of approx. 89,000 -- placing it solidly in the middle of the rankings. I even cranked up the racism penalty to try and throw it off more! Thankfully I'm confident it'll get knocked out early, but it makes me so mad that far better books like [b:Radiant Child|18552623|Radiant Child The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat|Javaka Steptoe|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1485976967l/18552623._SX50_.jpg|26280285] are ranked really low due primarily to a paucity of ratings.
I might re-read and write an actual review, but really I don't have anything better to say than what Debbie Reese already said! Her Goodreads review is good but she has also written about Paul Goble's bullshit many times on her wonderful blog.

medium-paced
Beautifully illustrated but read critically for Native content. Why research & authenticity matters in diverse books.
I can understand why it was a Caldecott winner since the year that it was chosen that type of illustration was not typical. However the font was small and wordy so my daughter lost interest as a new reader. She did tell her own story with the beautiful pictures which is just as good as reading the story. It shows her creativity. I used it to also talk about how people lived before cars, houses, and technology.
Oh dear, I had a review and the program didn't save it, it appears.
I thought this a very strange story. The artwork was lovely, but it was a strange legend. I guess most legends are strange. It had a Catharine the Great feel to me to the story.
A girl loves horses and one day they stampede away with her and get lost for a year. She does not want to return to her village.
The kids were crazy about this one either. Neither of them got the story. They both gave this love stars. I'm sorry I lost the review I wrote.

I like the art, but I'm iffy on the author, etc. All things brought up before, so I'll end here as I don't have anything much to add.
