4.5 stars. So close to perfect. The only reason I’m deducting is for dubious non consensual situations in the beginning. This book was published in 2006 and there are some things that are not seen today in terms of content but it’s still a pretty good fantasy book. Timing is important as this is a world where magical creatures live alongside humans in the modern world. There is a werewolf using a computer and a Valkyrie who likes online shopping. I was surprised by how funny the book was. A lot of sarcasm and wit between the characters. We have Lachlain, a Scottish Lykae aka werewolf who literally cuts off his leg after smelling his “mate” so he can free himself and find her. His mate is Emma who is half vampire/half Valkyrie. So begins some kidnapping and a journey to the Scottish countryside, Russia?, and the bayou of Louisiana. I was engrossed and had a great time. The spice was spicy, the story was layered and the characters were entertaining. This is a huge series but each book can be standalone however I think reading them in order makes it a better experience.

Really interesting world building with all of the different creatures of Lore. Cute story but it didn't build tension/suspense as much as I wanted, but I'll read the sequel for sure!
I really didn't like the first 60 or so pages of this book... bordered on hating it, in fact. The "hero" of the book was a total jerk; there was a lot of force involved which is something I really hate in romance. A lot of girls like a take-charge kind of guy, but kidnap and rape are taking that a little far, in my opinion. (Actually, I think that's more than just my opinion.) I don't find them attractive or endearing, and hate books where the girl falls in love with a guy who does that.
But based on numerous good reviews of this book and the rest of the series, and a lot of encouragement from the people in the PNR group, I stuck this one out.
And I was glad I did. I still didn't love this book, I'm only giving it 3 stars, but it did, in fact, get better. Both lead characters became more likable, and the heroine eventually grew a spine and put her man in his place.:)
But what was good about this book was what went beyond the primary boy meets girl story. There's an overarcing story that started to get really interesting. This series is more than just vampires; it has all kinds of your favorite fantasy creatures; werewolves, valkyrie, fey, witches, ghouls, wraiths... The valkyrie were especially fun. I liked the way Cole wrote those characters.
So I will continue reading this series. I hear they just keep getting better, so I've got my fingers crossed.
6/17 Re-read: 2 stars this time. Egads, Lachlain is TERRIBLE. Not a good romantic hero. They should re-chain him in the catacombs but instead of endless fire, this time it's just someone endlessly kicking him in the balls. But I had to start at the beginning, you know? On to the next.
