The magic system in this book doesn’t make any sense to me. Graves is supposed to be a winter god, but he was born in the 1500s or so. Does that mean there was no summer/winter cycle before that? It seems like if someone is going to be a winter god, they should at least be prehistoric in age. It’s also not clear to me how this robin/wren relationship actually works - is there a magical connection there? Is this a predetermined role or one they take on? It’s very unclear to me
This book also went really big on the explicit scenes compared to the previous book
I really disliked the reveal that Jason was secretly the one that put a spell on Kierse. The idea that the spell was also a siphon of her energy worked fine, but I think Jason being a part of this world took away some of the independent character building that Kierse had and diminished her independent background.
Additionally, they make it clear that Jason can sense her magic and immediately knew when the spell was broken because her magic was gone from him. However, he left her for dead and was surprised to find she was alive many years ago, despite the fact that he should be able to sense that her magic is still not gone from him. Also, it makes no sense that he would choose to leave her for dead if she was the most powerful person he was siphoning magic from. It would make way more sense to lock her in a basement somewhere and make sure she was alive at all times so he didn’t lose his magic source, or at the very least to make sure she didn’t die. His actions only made sense when he was the human thief ring boss
As for the summer/winter god thing there was a hint at the end that maybe they stole the mantle from a predecessor, which I can accept as a magic system, but in that case it should have been made clear. If it wasn’t clear because Kierse didn’t know it, then it’s an obvious question she should have asked
Also Nate and Gen (and maybe Niamh) were the only characters I liked so I hate that he’s dead

Literally fuck Lorcan and the butch who had Nate killed. I have never been so angry by a book. Poor Kierse can never catch a break and have more than a split second of happiness

Based on my review, you're going to go 'why is it a 4.5?? It seems like you didn't like it at all!' But I did!! The overall story, characters, growth, and representation is SO GOOD in this book! There are just some writing frustrations I have. A character in a sarai? A character in a wheelchair? So many different races and cultures represented? Characters learning how to communicate and be honest without having to worry about a blow up reaction? LOVE IT, GIVE ME MORE.
I wish the heist was a little more...heisty? Tense? Both times it felt fairly easy and I think I was hoping/looking for the same feel/complexity as Six of Crows.
Lorcan is such a lil Tamlin and I hate him.
I didn't like how Kierse's struggle between Lorcan & Graves was more of a flip-flop than actual struggle. I think the author was trying to describe her pull to Lorcan as unavoidable, but it just read as girl couldn't make up her mind to me. She knew what she was doing but there was always that little comment that said part of her wanted it. #teamGraves
