Definitely a lot bum to reach the dharma but who says it ain’t just another path. To each their own.
It's a mixed bag. Forceful, cinematic descriptions with the straightforward charm of Haiku (so often mentioned in this book) and fine-tuned observations about people are intertwined with rambling, patronizing, and self-congratulatory criticism of others/ "society" and bits of poetry that the author didn't have the self awareness to leave out. The narrator is a weird blend of mom friend, failed cult leader, and Eeyore.

I was suprised how much I enhoyed this. I read it in the 70's becuase it was a Kerouac book and was taken by the tales of the beat generation and their search for enlightement through travel, talk, speed and booze.
This time round that all seemed rather adolescent, but I was really taken by the descriptions of mother nature and its universal connectedness while up in the mountains and the cabin in the woods. It ends with him setting off for a spell as a forest ranger in Desolation Peak ( as per a later book Desolation Angels).
Still a self centered male tale, despite the different readers perspective 50 years on.

There were some good parts that prevented the one star, but this is a really bad book and you should just reread on the road or maybe read either the original scroll version or the edited version, for a change and to experience new things instead
