Deeply informative and moving, and a text that every citizen of the developed world should read. Demick deftly interweaves facts and narratives in a way that will truly impact readers. If you have the faintest interest in North Korea and its people, this book is worth your time.
One of the most eye-opening books I have ever read. I never knew how austere life fornthe ordinary citizen in Norht Korea is. It's unbelievable to think that a government can be so successful in keeping its people ignorant about how most of the rest of the world lives.
Shocking and heartbreaking; a must read. It will haunt you.
Incredible oral history of North Korea and its defectors. It was educational, enlightening, and emotional.

I really enjoy reading this book...It bring me to North Korean life...so many things I don't know and don't even care before was highlighted in this book...I love the way she tells the story of those people living in such a life...suddenly feel sad for not contributing or doing anything to them.. but i'm happy at least my questions, my doubt, my puzzle being solved..but I guess I need to find other books/works related to North Korea for better understanding..this book is a gateway for that path...I totally recommended this book for those who want to know the fundamental of North Korean people's life..
An astonishing look into the real lives of recent defectors from North Korea. This is one of the most eye-opening books I've ever read. The author is incredibly well informed and an excellent writer.
Absolutely fascinating; even more so than "Aquariums of Pyongyang" because it tells the stories of 6 different North Korean defectors rather than one. It also gives more political and historical background than "Aquariums." I read it in less than 2 days and highly recommend it.
This book builds a great case for being grateful for what you have. The personal stories were very interesting to me, but I was more fascinated by the propaganda and the methods the Communist regime uses to to control its citizens.
