I read this for book club. I found an audiobook of this book at my library. If it wasn't for both those pillars, I wouldn't have gone far in this book. I get that Sinclair goes through a journey. He is connected to the people who teaches him more about himself. But why is it interesting? Why should I care? The whole time I was waiting for an epiphany to occur. There was ten minutes left of the mp3. I waited and listened for something worth finishing this story for. Hearing the last words I imagined a much better way to tell a story about brotherhood and friendship. I thought Demian and his mother were part of some cult who wanted to enlist Sinclair. It wasn't clear to me. I interpreted this story much differently than those who enjoyed it. Not all stories are meant for everyone. This one wasn't meant for me.

This book becomes more understandable when viewed in the time it was published (1919) and the last chapter even directly mentions the war. However Sinclair's ultimate goal seems to be everything and nothing. Through continued introspection all he really achieves is making is friends into his gods rather that seeking out his purpose in life. He realises he is 'here' but doesn't know how to handle existence. Moving from drunkenness at the beginning, to art, to music appreciation, to idolising his friends.
The 'mark of Cain' always on him allows others to make a connection, however he wanders around all these people further 'moving closer to himself' which in the end just smacks of selfishness through and through (again similar to Narcissus and Goldmund).

That being said it was an enjoyable read, and I can certainly relate to his struggle to find identity in a communal world, and the themes in this are very similar to Siddartha and Narcissus & Goldmund. The book was a bit like this review, rambling and doesn't really say much.
