Omg the whirlwind I just went on with Ezra, Ricki, and Ms. Della chile. I’m going to have to buy this book so I can reread it when I forget about it. It kept me at the edge of my seat. First I thought it was going to be like a Outlander type vibe but with black people, but honestly, it’s so much better and heartwelling and tear inducing.

A good romance is a good romance!!!!

This book is beautiful. Everyone should be talking about it! The found family and relationships built were amazing! It made you want to be apart of their friendships and stories. We should all have a Tuesday and Ms. Della in our lives. ❤️ The magical realism makes the book that more intriguing and fun! The talk of Voodoo and its origins was so cool! Would recommend!

WOW. I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did!! Ricki and Ezra’s story was 10/10. Dying for love is a TRUE sacrifice. Mrs. Della is the Grandma of the year. Okay?! I knew she was going to come through for them. I love her for saving my girl Ricki and showing her the true meaning of FAMILY. I was not expecting the plot twist at all man. I really enjoyed this book bc I could go on and on!

Rounded up from 3.5 stars

Pros:
All the characters are enjoyable
Loved how the fates collided (ie: when Ricki happened to meet her future landlord)
Enjoyed Ricki's and Ezra's relationship
Liked how Ricki started to grow her business

Cons:
I don't mind detailed love scenes, but I think they took away from this book
Would have liked more development of Ezra's early years
Discussion of racial disparity seemed to be an afterthought that was thrown in

Fav Quote:
“I don't have any education, and neither did they, but learning happens everywhere, if you listen.”

I think with a concept this bold, there's a tricky, but necessary, balance to maintain between being absolutely magical and way too bizarre. And unfortunately, I don't think this book pulled it off.

I wanted to love this, but ultimately the combination of insta-love, a flawed magic (curse?) system, and a bit too much quirkiness was too much for me. Others have loved and enjoyed this book, and I'm so glad they've had a better reading experience. This one simply was not for me.

And honestly, I probably should've known it wasn't for me when it was revealed that Ricki's god given name is Richard.

👍 Satisfying

Just could not get into the writing style at all which was a huge shame as I love a dual timeline and the historical aspects - just didn’t click with me sadly!
