This beautiful YA book was written over 40 years ago and is just as readable today as it would have been when it was first published. Ten year old Jess is determined to be the fastest runner in the fifth grade, so he practices all summer long. Right at the end of summer, he notices that someone has moved into the old Perkins place next door. His new neighbour is Leslie, who confounds all of his ideas of what a friend should be. Despite Leslie beating him and all the other fifth graders in their first running races of the new school year, she and Jess soon become best friends. Walking near their properties, they discover an old crab apple tree near a dry creek bed with a rope swing hanging on it. Leslie declares their new land "Terabithia" and proclaims them King and Queen of Terabithia. As the school year moves on their friendship deepens until an unthinkable tragedy happens. Jess is able to draw on the power of Terabithia and the love of his family to move on.

Well, that certainly qualified for this category.
This is one of Those Books You're Supposed to Have Read. What was I reading when I was the age range for this book, I'm now wondering? Because I read my ass off back in the day and this was never on my radar.
This is, by the way, the third book I've read this month that deals with grief, and I still don't understand what I'm doing to myself. Because seriously, self?
This is a really sweet book. An easy read for such a hard subject, and I find it more than amusing that this is a banned book. This book would be immensely helpful for any child who has to deal with death at such a young age.
The friendship between Jess and Leslie is so sweet, and so innocent. They learn so much about life together, and it's pure and joyful. It's what makes what happens so painful. But the ending is joyful, Jess hasn't lost his imagination, and his bond with his younger sister grows even more because of what has happened.
So sweet, so lovely.

This book will make you laugh then cry then laugh again!
Such an amazing book that will make you feel and care for the characters. Though I have to say it wasn't as emotional as it could have been.
