Weird and sad. No 5th grade kids can think and speak like those portrayed in the book. They only acted their age in play; not in school, alone, or in thought. And sad for the obvious reason. All the winning Newberry Award books have to be sad....

This book worked for two reading challenges I'm working on this year, and would have also fit the third if I hadn't already read a book that filled that prompt. For the 2018 BookRiot Read Harder Challenge, I used this for "a children's classic published before 1980." For the 2018 PopSugar Ultimate Reading Challenge, I used it for "a childhood classic you've never read." It would have also worked for "a banned book" for the 2018 Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge, although I was surprised to find out why it is so frequently banned! I knew in general terms what the story was about before I read it, but greatly appreciated the author's note that was included with the edition that I read. In some ways, knowing the story behind the story was even more gut-wrenching. I'm so glad that I finally read this classic and hope it continues to give comfort to readers in need for many more years to come.
