This can be summed up with:
”Right,” Holden said. “No coffee. This is a terrible, terrible planet. Show me how to make everyone better.”
Humanity has its new frontier: New Terra or Ilus as different factions name it.
Holden is sent to mediate between squatters on the alien planet who are mostly Belt and outer planets, and the RCE with rights sent by Earth.
We have the most yucky villain in this one - the military leader of the RCE who just wants his name to go down in history as being the first to set up civilisation on Ilus, despite a perfectly functioning one existing before he and his company touched down and started shooting.
She wished she could have seen it all before the storm. At best now, they would be able to guess at what had come before and see what came after. She took consolation by reminding herself that was always true. All of nature was a record of crisis and destruction and adaptation and flourishing and being knocked back down again.

We see both the cruelty, depravity, and greed of humanity; as well as their comfort, coming together, and resilience.
We also get interludes from ‘The Investigator’, reminding us that this world is alien, that there is something out there scaring even the aliens.
I just found this one boring until the last 40%. Probably because it follows the format of someone getting power and trigger happy and Holden stepping in.
”Civilization has a built-in lag time. Just like light delay. We fly out here to this new place, and because we’re civilized, we think civilization comes with us. It doesn’t. We build it. And while we’re building it, a whole lot of people die. You think the American west came with railroads and post offices and jails? Those things were built, and at the cost of thousands of lives. They were built on the corpses of everyone who was there before the Spanish came. You don’t get one without the other. And it’s people like me that do it. People like you come later. All of this?” Murtry waved his left hand at himself and Holden. “This is because you showed up too early. Come back after I’ve built a post office and we’ll talk.”

The fourth book in the EXPANSE series finds the heroes and crew of the Rocinate protecting scientists and rebels from the dangers of a new, alien threat, and the familiar evil of a corporate one.
As always, Holden and his crew are absolute joys. They are the definition of found family, willing to do anything for each other. We learn a little more about some of them, Alex in particular, and it only endeared them to me more.
The new characters continue to be complex and compelling. From a scientist pushing herself too hard, to a father rebelling for what he believes in only to relive the horror of his choice, to a soldier who comes to learn his idols may be more flawed than not.
Character growth has always been key to these books and I loved how fresh everything felt. The same can be said for the plot (which is more sciency this time around), and the world building. Things continue to, well, expand, into cosmic territory. The tension is a steady climb until the very end, making my heart skip multiple times. The plotting and writing are so strong, making for an excellent reading experience.
I’m still completely hooked on the EXPANSE and am eager to see where the Roci and her crew go next! Big things are coming!

I wish I'd reread the whole series from the beginning before I started this one, but I caught on enough to still enjoy it.

This has been the weakest book in the series for me. I feel like besides Holden, the crew of the Roci really hasn't gotten enough character development. The guest characters always describe them the same way and we never really get enough of an insight into their backgrounds until it is pivotal to the plot/message. Corey does a good job of exploring tribalism and making it clear that cops are evil. The stakes are starting to feel pretty low for the main characters Like I have the feeling Amos is going to actually die one of these times but until then his plot armor is strong as shit.
