I wish I could unwatch the show so I could have experienced this book without knowing how things turned out. The building tension of how many things could go wrong was done really well. Very interesting stuff we learn. Elvi was a bit annoying, but we get so much more insight into her than the show. Cool to see minor characters from earlier books feature here.
Moderate: Death, Gun violence
Minor: Fire/Fire injury
This series rules.
I originally steamrolled into this having just finished 1-3 and that was a mistake, there's a huge tempo shift and it cost me - it took me several months to pick it back up and restart. Once I was past that original 15% I covered earlier in 2024 though, it was an absolute blast.
The vibe check at the epilogue is immense - I can't image where this series is going to go, it's such a masterclass in imagination and consequence.

The gates have opened and revealed a thousand habitable planets ripe for the settling, which has led to humanity expanding beyond its borders in a mad rush: the first proof-of-concept is a planet named New Terra or Ilus, depending on who you listen to. Which makes Cibola Burn a sort of new-world tale, an exercise in how colonialism really fuckin sucks, plus displaying human selfishness and greed versus arbitrary property rights and shortsightedness in the face of a far, far bigger problem. The clash between the squatters and the corporate settlement is maddening at times due to people’s (realistic) inability to work together, and poor Holden being trapped in the middle trying to mediate.
The book isn’t as ball-to-the-walls insane as [b:Abaddon’s Gate|16131032|Abaddon's Gate (The Expanse, #3)|James S.A. Corey|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1407572059s/16131032.jpg|17606564] and has a bit of a slower start as it sets the stage — until Holden finally enters the picture and things start heating up on the planet, and I wound up glued to the pages and desperate to find out what happened next. As always, the new characters are a diverse and interesting bunch, but this time my favourite character was prrrobably (predictably) Dmitri Havelock. Also, help, I still love Miller so much; the investigator chapters were filled with really lovely dream-like prose and made my heart ache. ♥
The final epilogue chapter super piques my interest for what’s coming down the pike, and everyone is telling me that Nemesis Games is apparently wild so I’m excited to continue. I love this series!!

Probably my least favorite of the Expanse series so far, but it wasn’t bad. It just felt like filler with a few things that happened at the very end to set up some future conflicts.
I just feel like those conflicts could have been set up without this entire book.
