I guess that this is "The Expanse, Phase 2" - or "What we did once the Ring opened up to other worlds". I originally read, reviewed and loved the first three books in the series when they were first published, but felt that after that I needed a break. It's now nearly ten years later, so its about time I continued!
After the major events of the first three books, this is a smaller scale effort. Its background is that of traditional Space Opera, which itself was often based on the frontier stories of old-school Westerns, with unknown terrain, settlers struggling to survive and landowners determined to stake and maintain their claim, albeit with space age weaponry.
Nothing wrong with that, of course but it may be worth noting that with the focus being on Holden and the crew of the Rosinante, the power politics of Earth and Mars (including Martian Bobby and UN world leader Avasarala) are placed in the background.
Instead we focus on the settlement of new planets beyond the ring and corporate shenanigans as new forces jockey for power. The issue of Miller and the proto-molecule that set all of this going is resolved - at least for now - which means presumably that the next book can boldly go where few have gone before.
Corey shows that even with a smaller scale these stories can work. The plot rolls forward and gains momentum by the end to make it a book that's difficult to put down.

Such a great book, such a great series. We're already 2 more short stories in and beginning on Nemesis Gate. Maybe the best scifi series written in the last decade and a bit
