Not the biggest fan of the new characters/side quests in this one, love how it ties different plots together, excited for the next one.

A little disappointed. This is the most plodding story of the series. New characters helped, but the ridiculous cardboard cutout of a villain was too much. A few good plot twists, but a more insular and quiet book...despite just traveling into the great expanse the series is named for...right?

It’s back!! The much beloved humor, action, and character drama returned in force, and I was very glad this book seemed to “right the ship” for me. It felt like having the crew back, with Holden and team having a more prioritized role this go-around. The mission seemed simple this time – prevent opposing factions from arguing themselves into oblivion on a newly colonized planet – but things are anything but straightforward as the planet starts to unveil surprises for both sides. Super interesting ideas in this one – I really enjoyed it.

What I Liked:
- I appreciated having POV’s in this book from characters that were at least recognizable as callbacks to prior installments in the series. I missed having an Avasarala POV (again) but this was better than having another batch of entirely brand new folks.

- I kind of loved all of Amos’s threats to
Spoiler kill Murtry
(as much as one should enjoy casual murder threats).

- All of the survival elements of the book were quite fun. I have always enjoyed tales of surviving the elements -- being planetside in this installment with a new ecology was quite cool to read. It was great to see the authors get to flex some creativity on local flora and fauna.

- Havelock was surprisingly likeable - he was a foil to Miller in his prior appearances, but it was nice to get the know the guy and see him feature here. Also, the comedy of him
Spoiler advising the team of scientists he trained how not to kill themselves when they tried to attack him
was priceless.

What I Didn’t:
- It was a little slow starting, but certainly worth pushing through.

- SPOILER:
Spoiler I'll miss the appearances of Miller, but I thought he received a fair, heroic exit, and it made sense that it should end sometime.
