I really enjoyed this story - I like that it was much more focused around very closely related story lines, unlike The Expanse TV series. I also appreciate that Naomi stayed on the ship -- and didn't go down to the planet like in the series, as well as the critical event on the planet (not "terrorism") and the embodiment of Miller finding an avatar in a billion year old piece of machinery.

Really a lot more enjoyably written than the tv show!

I mean, this was fun - as usual - but this book lost something compared to the past installments of the series.

Like, the previous book presented us with the most interesting villain the series has seen to date. She evolved. We touched on the themes of redemption and forgiveness and the potential for forgiveness to allow people to grow and learn to do better.

So... Now we have Murtry. A stereotypical two dimensional corporate sociopath who, we are led to believe, is merely an asshole who deserves the just punishments that he is starting to face at the end of the book. I guess all of that bullshit about forgiveness and redemption that just saved the solar system in the last book goes out the window then? I mean, I get that some villains really are asshole sociopaths. But could he be a LITTLE more nuanced maybe?

I suppose Bajia was a sort of villain/hero who did evolve and redeem himself over the course of the story. So there's that. Fair enough. I'm curious as to what conclusions about evolving out of humanity's tribalism Corey is getting at. Right now it seems a little unclear. I'm still into this and want to read the next one. So, don't get me wrong, I still had fun with this. It just wasn't the strongest link for me in the series so far.
