This is the best book I read in 2019. I am completely blown away. Everyone should read it.
“There is no such thing as homogeneity. Our lives are as different as our faces.”
The best books are the ones that make you think and oh my god this book had me reevaluating all my moral standpoints.
I used to think that certain people deserve the death penalty so long as there is evidence that is non-refutable - rapists especially. And while I still don’t know entirely what to think, my view on it is much less simplistic and absolute as it was before reading this book. It didn’t give me the answer - because there isn’t one answer - every aspect of life is contextual - but it gave me the tools with which I can begin to form my own opinion on complicated topics, such as punishment and rehabilitation, and I think that is one of the best things a book can give you.
This book made me think about and reevaluate my views in topics I’d previously assumed i’d known enough about, and made me realise how dismissive i’d unknowingly been to them - forgiveness, religion, suicide, acceptance, love, and ultimately, capital punishment - and I hope I remember how this work of art made me feel for as long as I can.

This was interesting in that it made me think about capital punishment, but not what I expected from the blurb. I felt it needed something more and I didn't feel any connection with the characters.

This book was definitely more challenging than I had expected for many reasons. Most of all the translation of the Korean left some dialogue unnatural and unusual for English, however moving past that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The plot revolves around a self-centred ex-kpop star and her brushes with death. If that's not sensational then I don't know what is! Insipid as that does sound, believe me I'm aware of it, the novel has true heart in a way that's uniquely Korean.
Although my rating is 3 stars mainly for the translation and how unwieldly it felt, this book is very interesting and thought-provoking. I will even admit to being moved by it many times.
