Predictable and weak. Didn't realise it was a YA book until a little way in. Ploughed on regardless. Scan read the last few chapters once I realised no big surprises were coming. Probably my own fault for picking a YA book without realising the genre.
3⭐️ this was fine, but probably won’t bother with the rest of the series
Greer has been accepted to a posh school with an ancient history. It seems amazing, but the thing about posh schools is that they’re stuffed with posh people. And the poshest of these are The Medievals: 6 students from well-to-do families who seemingly run the whole school. So when Greer is invited to go on a weekend hunting trip with them, so can’t quite believe her luck. She shouldn’t.
Excellent premise and really eerie history in the world building here. The atmosphere of both the campus and the estate are impeccable. The moderately diverse cast list is well done, but understandably one-sided when you consider the history of the place.
Unfortunately, the characters are just a bit too one dimensional. Since they’re all teens, it’s easy to leave this up to their “shallow” natures, but I think that’s a bit lazy.
And Greer is a good example of this. Her thinking is often so surface. And her constant movie allusions went from quirky and fun to just annoying. I think the whole thing might have had a better feel if it weren’t in first person POV.
There’s a lot to like, though. And it’s enticing enough to wonder what comes next.

Hated the dialogue and writing. The plot had potential but didn’t deliver.

Slow build that ends with a punch. Great opening. The ending really made this satisfying.
