It took a long time for this book to pull me in, and I think I could have been happy with it as a stand-alone. But I won’t be reaching for the next books in the series, though I loved the other outsiders.
One of my biggest problems with this book wasn’t the constant film references or the mentions of what makes Greer a “bad feminist.” I teach high school and that’s how my students see the world: through their passions or a movement they are just starting to grasp.
What grated on me was Greer’s constant dismissal of the medieval girls. She goes into detail about the three boys, but lumps all three girls together as stylish blondes that flip their hair. This is never called out as “bad feminist behavior,” though it was the most blatant to me.

I watched a tv series called Stag on BBC2 a while ago about a group of men who go on a sort of camping trip as a stag do for one of the guys but it turns into some sort of murderous encounter, and since watching that series, I’ve been thinking to myself “damn, I wish that series was a book” and then a few days later I was scrolling through Goodreads and I found this book. As soon as I read the description, I instantly got a similar vibe and I was like I have to read this!
I love the way the author writes. It makes it feel as though the main character is actually speaking to you like how a friend would talk to you- it’s really engaging and I see that as good storytelling.
I liked the puns that were slipped in during the second half of the book. Made me chuckle even when the scenes were dark.
However, this book wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. It was good at first but I felt that it was a little dragged out and I found that I was starting to feel a little bored whilst reading it. I feel like this might have been because the book wasn’t what I was expecting so I felt a little disappointed.
Nevertheless though, this book is very good! I love the mystery and ye olden time vibes it’s got going on. It definitely picked up right at the end and I’m for sure gonna purchase the sequel at some point when it gets released!

Pretty impressed with this very odd YA story. Liked all the movie references, they even made me want to watch a few that I haven't. Good writing and would read her again.
Had some thoughts about Shafeen and the others. Still enjoyed the book though.

Greer is new in the elitist school called S.T.A.G.S., where only the the richest children go (or those granted with scholarships like Greer) and, among them, the Medievals rule the place: the richest, the most beautiful teens of the place. The coolest kids. That's why when Greer is invited to a weekend at the estate that belongs to the leader of the Medievals things get...dark.
I didn't like this, and I really wanted. But no. Not even a page. But I will explained better in a review when my rage is controlled.
Spoiler free review: Coming soon.
