STAGS Review on K-Books
"It's unbelievable really, the reviving power of a hot bath, a cup of tea and a roaring fire."
Thriller's never used to be my sort of read. I never really would have chose to pick them up until a year or two ago when I picked one up out of the blue and loved it. Since then, it's never been a favourite genre of mine but every now and then I do love to dive into this genre. As it was nearing Halloween, it was the perfect time for me to read a thriller so when I was offered the chance to review this one I jumped at the chance. S.T.A.G.S was a interesting and addictive read and I enjoyed it.
S.T.A.G.S follows the story of Greer, a unpopular and quiet student at the prestigious S.T.A.G.S boarding school. When Greer is invited to a mysterious weekend with the most popular people in school she is intrigued and excited. But is there more to this weekend? Greer may be in danger by going... but can she resist the popular and the powerful?
Honestly, I was a little bit disappointed in S.T.A.G.S. It is dubbed as a YA thriller and I was super excited to be creeped out, but this was not creepy in the slightest. I would call this book a thriller in the loosest sense of the word. It was more like a YA contemporary where the characters had some murderous tendencies. It was more a mystery than a hard-core thriller. I just feel like I was expecting mroe from it and although I really enjoyed the storyline I wanted it to be a bit more thrilling.
One thing I really enjoyed was the storyline and the writing. MA Bennet's writing was addictive and I couldn't put the book down. It was a fast-pacing and intriguing storyline and I enjoyed the world building and story telling. I will definitely pick another MA Bennett book up at some point.
S.T.A.G.S was an intriguing and addictive storyline but it just fell a little bit flat for me. If you enjoy contemporary books with a mystery twist then this will be the perfect book for you. Unfortunately, I'm just not much of a contemporary reader and I was expecting more.
"It was like that bit in Beauty and the Beast when the Beast dances with Belle. Except there was no Belle. And no music. And no candlelight. Just a beast."

I got through this book quite quickly, so that must be a good sign. Minus a star because I found the writing quite blocky (if that’s a good way to describe it) and not the best. But it was actually quite amusing at times and very scary. I wouldn’t read it before you go to bed as Mrs wickham would probably advise. Anyway, I think you should read this book if you like the psychological/ creepy genre.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought some of the actions of the characters in the book were a bit unrealistic for me, especially the life I live, but it was interesting to read.
I thought that the concept of the whole secret society ‘hating the underdogs’ and trying to kill them was a bit over the top for me. I’ll read any murder mystery though and definitely enjoyed the ending of this book!
Would recommend a read.

I thought that this book had such a great plot and I enjoyed reading it. It was different to the books I usually read but I still loved reading this. The characters always keep you guessing and the twists throughout the book are well-thoughtout and executed. Overall, this book was great to read and I highly recommend it.
The more i think about this book, the more i like it. It delivered on the creepy setting, the cult trope, and a good "what happened" plot.
SPOILERS AHEAD!! also trigger warnings for the book & review: suicide
Things I Liked:
- I really loved the foreshadowing that was in the book. I thought it was all planned very carefully and it was SO subtle you wouldn't know it was foreshadowing until later in the book.
- I really liked the characters. I'll say I was swooning for Henry too even though I knew he would be the "bad guy."
Things I Didn't Like:
- throughout the entire book the MC refers to Henry's death as a murder, but it wasn't a murder. It was suicide; henry jumped off that cliff knowing he was going to die. no one pushed him. but Greer continually referred to it as a murder. I understand how she can feel guilty that she wasn't able to save him but she did not kill him.
- i felt like the beginning and ending were so much longer than they needed to be.

So disappointing. The small part that I’ve read was boring and dumbed down as well as incredibly frustrating.

Om man tar bort faktumet att där var för mycket "kärlek' vid fel tid, så var detta en av de bästa böckerna jag läst. Mycket lättläst men samtidigt lite svårare engelska på ett enkelt sätt, if that makes sense. Anywho, it's great, we love a good "murder" and great manslaughterers.
S.T.A.G.S follows Greer as she tries to fit into her new private school called S.T.A.G.S. Greer has no friends and no one speaks to her so when an invitation comes to join Henry de Warlencourt and the rest of the Medievals at Longcross Hall, Henry's country home, for the weekend she goes, ignoring the dread and worry she felt. Huntin', Shootin' and Fishin'. These are the weekend sports that Greer and her friends must survive in order to reveal the truth about the bloody sports and what they discover at Longcross.
This book is perfect for anyone looking for an easy and thrilling read. There are twists and turns right until the end making you unable to put the book down and once you have finished the book you are left wanting more. I have not read another book with this setting and storyline, making it a really unique and stand out.
I like how Bennett has referenced scenes within this plot and storyline to similar scenes from other books and films*, it was fun and interesting to read as if you read or watched the book or film then you feel more connected to Greer, who narratives this story and is a film fanatic. I am a film fanatic as well, but for some people the constant reference to films or books might be annoying.
This book is one I could read over and over and not be tried of the storyline as every time you read it, it feels like the first time again. There is romance in this storyline but it is not the main focus of the book. However, the romance adds to the plot and to the characters development. If you are looking for a book that has a darker storyline and more of a horror plot then I would not necessarily pick up this book.
*If have not seen or read The Fault in our Stars, or if there are any books or films that you have been putting off watching, be wary that some of references in this book are spoilers to those films or books.
