Kate Burkholder, Chief of Police from Painters Mills, gets a visit from three elders of an Amish community in Pennsylvania’s Kish Valley. The body of former Amish bishop Ananias Stoltzfus was discovered (he went missing over a decade earlier), and the man accused of his murder is none other than Kate’s first love, Jonas Bowman. Jonas is an Amish man whose family had to leave Painters Mill, leaving Kate heartbroken in his wake. Kate journeys to the Kish Valley to do some civilian investigating to try to clear Jonas’s name. But is he the same man she remembers from her youth? Is he worth saving?

I enjoyed this one too. It’s always a solid read—a Linda Castillo book.
I like that this one dove into more of Kate’s Amish roots and her first love. It’s always best when we see more of her past, and this one was fun too, because Kate had to investigate as a civilian which is a lot harder.

Maybe it’s because this is the 14th or 15th book in the series, but I knew there was going to be a car crash and a barn fire. There always is.

As always, Linda Castillo comes through. An excellent read. Didn't suspect who the killer was. Perfect ending!

First book I’ve read in this series & it would do well as a standalone novel! I enjoyed the author’s writing & the character of Katie - so will definitely be checking out more from this series

Many thanks to Goodreads.com, MacMillan Publishing, and Linda Castillo for the opportunity for an advanced copy of this book!!

I have read all of the books in the Kate Burkholder series and have really enjoyed all of them!! They can be read as stand alones, but you really don't want to miss any of them so that you get all of Kate's history.

The Hidden One is probably one of my top favorites because the author takes us out of state this time to another Amish area for Kate to investigate a crime. Ms. Castillo really gave a lot of details in the solving of the murder and of course I was very surprised at the ending!!

You don't want to miss out on any of the Kate Burkholder books!!

The Hidden One by Linda Castillo
(Kate Burkholder #14)

Kate "I'm a cop" Burkholder doesn't spend a lot of time in Painter's Mill in this 14th novel of the Kate Burkholder series. She has been asked for help by the elders of another town because a man of their town has been accused of a long ago murder. Of course Kate will help, the man is her first love, someone she hasn't seen or spoken to since she was fifteen years old. Kate nosing around into a crime in a town that isn't in her jurisdiction doesn't go over well with the local law enforcement of that town but details like that never stop Kate. Another thing that never stops Kate is body damage that would kill a mere mortal. As usual, Kate finds herself in nearly fatal situations a time or four but that's par for the course for her.

Jonas Bowman, Kate's first love, has been accused of Amish bishop Ananias Stoltzfus's murder . Stoltzfus disappeared years ago and only now have his bones been found. On the surface, Stoltzfus was well respected but when digging deeper, Kate finds he had a very dark side and that he'd made enemies over the years. Too bad Jonas aired his grievances with Stoltzfus in public so it's very easy to pin the murder on him. Never fear, nothing stops Kate Burkholder, when she's on the trail of justice. This story checks all the Kate Burkholder marks and she'll show the local cops how crime solving is done right.

Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for providing a digital copy of the book for me to read in exchange for my honest opinion.

Synopsis: The town’s elders arrive in Painters Mill to ask chief of police Kate Burkholder for help, but she quickly realizes she has a personal connection to the crime. The handsome Amish man who stands accused of the murder, Jonas Bowman, was Kate’s first love. Forced to confront a painful episode from her past, Kate travels to Pennsylvania’s Kishacoquillas Valley, where the Amish culture differs dramatically from the traditions she knows. Though Bishop Stoltzfus was highly respected, she soon hears about a dark side to this complex man. What was he hiding that resulted in his own brutal death? But even after being accosted and threatened in the dead of night, she refuses to back down. Is she too close to the case—and to Jonas—to see clearly? There’s a killer in the Valley who will stop at nothing to keep the past buried. Will they get to Kate before she can expose the truth? Or will the bishop’s secrets remain hidden forever?

My Thoughts: This is No. 14 in a series. It can be read as a standalone but you might get a better picture of Detective Kate’s personal history by reading them in order. This one is a bit different as we do not see Kate’s team in this edition, however, we do get see her preteen Amish lifestyle somewhat. The author does a good job of describing this small Amish town, with a great deal of respect to the Amish culture, and you feel like you are there with Kate trying to solve this mystery. The author does a good job of developing the characters and giving more depth to Kate’s character. This was a fast-paced, page-turning book that was hard to put down. I enjoyed this book very much.

I think I’m at a point in this series where it’s beginning to feel like too many things have happened to one person/cop and it’s starting to get far fetched. Maybe I need to read each book as if it’s a stand alone instead and I’d appreciate it more. Nonetheless it’s a good read!
