Got my Painter's Mill, Chief Kate Burkholder fix for another year! (My only semi-complaint: not enough Tomesetti!)

I’m a big fan of this series so was excited to read and review the latest installment. It did not disappoint!
This time, Police chief and former Ohio Amish Kate Burkholder has been called to PA to help an old friend accused of a crime. The storyline and new setting proved an interesting change in the series - and it was nice to learn a lot more about Kate’s background growing up and how it formed her adult life.
Solid 5 star rating for this. It’s an easy, quick read you won’t want to put down.

Both my wife and I enjoy reading this series. This book has Kate Burkholder going to Amish country in Pennsylvania. Three Amish bishops/elders come to visit her In Painters Mill, Ohio, where she is the police chief. They want her to go to Pennsylvania to investigate a murder. Jonas Bowman has been arrested for the murder of Ananias Stoltzfus and they believe that he is innocent. They have heard of Kate. They know that she grew up Amish, but left the fold as a teenager. They know that she is a very good investigator. Jonas and Kate have history and this is explained through flashback chapters interspersed throughout the book.
Because of this history, Kate decides to take a few days off and go to Lancaster County, Pa,., to investigate. She is attacked several times while there, and always miraculously survives, a recurring theme is this series.
This book can be read as a stand alone, but I recommend that you read them in order, as there are developments in Kate's personal life as the series progresses.
One quote: A bit of humor: "Buggy horse took a crap in the street," he tells me. "Lady in the RAV stepped in it." "Bet that didn't go over very well," I mutter as I squeeze between two teenage boys who've stopped to see what all the excitement is about.
Joe's mouth twitches. "She's pissed, Chief. Went over to to confront him. Just about tore my head off when I told her to move her car."
We both rate it 4 bright stars and plan to keep reading this series.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for sending me this eARC through NetGalley.

4 stars. Audiobook. I enjoyed this latest installment in the Kate Burkholder series, but I found myself missing the regular crew too. It was interesting to fill in more of Kate's early life - we have gotten quite a bit of her backstory filled in now. I enjoy the parts where Kate gets to show us her tough cop side, and all in all it's a good book, just not my favorite of the series. I had one major sticking point with this book that honestly knocked it down because it annoyed me so much.
Spoiler If someone's going to rough up someone else with a warning to 'get out of town now and leave this alone' why on Earth would they also disable the vehicle she could leave town in, to the point where it has to have a couple of days' work in the shop to be useable to leave? This made no sense!!

I have been reading and enjoying this series since it began in 2009. Some I have enjoyed more than others, but all in all this is a series I tend to recommend for murder mystery lovers.

I am thankful I received an advance kindle copy and audiobook, so that I could go back and forth between the two. Ultimately I prefer reading and not listening. Although, Kathleen McInerney did a fine job narrating her voice is not what I have pictured Kate's to be all these years. 9 hours and 18 minutes and an easy listen at 2x.

Linda's prologues always suck you right in and this one is no different. Kate is being asked to help an old friend from her Amish days. Jonas is being accused of murdering a Bishop. As Kate investigates, in the thorough way that she is known for, she slowly uncovers secrets and lies about this Bishop. Can Kate solve the case without causing a ruckus, or will she put herself in death defying circumstances like always?

I liked the flashbacks to 21 years ago that gave us a feel of Kate and Jonas's relationship when they were kids.
Since she traveled to a neighboring town we unfortunately didn't have any interaction with our old friends ~ Pickles, Glock, Mona, etc. I don't feel like Tomasetti gets the page time he deserves either, and I would love a spin off series following him. Hint hint Linda Castillo.

An intense thrill ride that fans of this author come to expect.

*Thanks to St. Martin's Press, Macmillan Audio USA, Linda Castillo and NetGalley for the advance audiobook. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*

"The Hidden One" is the 14th book in the Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo and did not disappoint.

In this Mystery Thriller, Kate travels to Pennsylvania's Kishacoquillas Valley, where the Amish culture differs dramatically from the traditions she knows. Here, she tries to solve the mystery of who killed Amish bishop Ananias Stoltzfus, who seemingly disappeared without a trace, until his remains are found. This case is close to Kate because her first love, Jonas Bowman, is the accused.

I've been dying to read this book, and it didn't disappoint. I fell in love with the Kate Burkholder series because she was so easy to like and understand, and the writing was phenomenal. This is another amazing book from Linda Castillo that I'd recommend everyone to read!

I absolutely loved loved loved this book. All the characters were so likeable even though I did find myself keeping all of them straight. I throughly enjoyed how some of the chapters we got a glance into Kate and Jonas’ past together. I have always been intrigued by Amish culture and I feel like this book gives you a decent idea of how the community is ran and the dynamics. My only complaint is I feel like this ended with so many loose ends, I wish there were more information on why this murder happened.

Overall, great, quick read! 4.5/5 - I will be reading more from this series!

Wow! Linda Castillo has done it again! I love reading the Kate Burkholder series. If you enjoy reading mysteries or if you enjoy reading Amish fiction, these books are for you. Kate Burkholder, former member of the Amish and current police chief of the Painters Mill Police Department, is tasked to look into a case that involves an Amish bishop and a former friend who is a member of the Amish community in Pennsylvania. Kate doesn't believe that Jonas killed his bishop but who did? Kate puts her life at risk and travels to Pennsylvania at the request of Amish elders to help them close the case on the murdered bishop and to clear Jonas' name. Can Kate solve the case? Will she be able to provide Jonas with the freedom he claims to deserve and get back to his family?

Thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the advance read copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
