It took a while for me to actually read this book. I like the anthology feeling of the book, but at the same time, it made me feel no rush to finish it since each story can be a stand-alone.
Each of the characters feels like a real person. They're different, strong, and interesting. Very eclectic point of view yet there's a common thread that connected all of them. They're different from the people around them, and they have various responses to that. All of them are valid and relatable, it could be empowering, it could be frustrating, but they're all unique experiences.
I like how all the women are connected in the book: mothers, daughters, friends, teachers. Each woman's life affected another. It is what the reality is. Immigrant stories, second or third generation stories, they all tell a story what it means when you want to belong to a place that's not your home in an ancestral sense. How the place can reject you, the unending search of identity, and the home that you make from your voice.
They're beautifully written, albeit I don't always remember all their names and how each of them connected.
