I would actually give this book 3 1/2 stars. I liked more than I thought I would, and I plan on reading more in this series. This book reminded me of Konrath and Kilborn's Jack Daniels series

How boring. I guess I just don't get into the English murder mystery. This one just didn't stick. I could care less about any of the characters and I didn't care if they caught the killer(s). So I didn't finish it.

2.5 stars. I seldom score low but how to allocate a rating on a book with a not too bad story but with extremely unlikeable characters? Plot not bad, pace was good, writing good. Unfortunately there is nothing to like about Lorne. Self centered, her needs, her wants, her job, her interests and no thought or action to spare for her family. This irritation dominated the book for me. I could not find one redeeming quality. The other characters are there because you need more than one, no other reason for their presence on the pages. Pete? Just a fat blob by her side. Her boss? Just a thorn in her side. The pathologist? Just a distraction. Her family? Just not important.

I really enjoyed the story and will probably read the other 2books in the series at some point. I found the font size very small on my kindle though and had to increase it quite a lot to make it comfortable to read. I downloaded the sample of the next book and the font size has improved on that.

I devoured this in one sitting - it was a really good read.

That's not to say it was perfect - I felt the dialogue was a little forced at times and I wasn't convinced by Lorne and Tom's relationship - I think it was dealt with slightly superficially but that doesn't take away from a really good read :)

I really enjoyed this book. Did find it a bit hard to read due to the British vinacular.

The headless body of a wealthy widow is discovered decomposing in Chelling Forest. Detective Inspector Lorne Simpkins and her partner, DS Pete Childs are assigned to the case. A few days later another victim, this time a young girl, is discovered. Who could the killer be and what's the connection between the two victims? Then after a third murder, the killer contacts Lorne with a grisly surprise. It looks like Lorne has a serial killer on her hands - and one that has become fixated on her. As she tries to solve the crimes, Lorne is also coping with a failing marriage and new, unsympathetic boss with whom she has a secret past. Then, as she begins to despair at the lack of clues, help arrives from an unlikely source.

Having read a few of the Justice series I thought it was time to read the ones I had missed out on.

So pleased that I started with this first book. It was just excellent. What a page turner of a book.

This is the first in a series of books and got to say I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading the rest.

I really loved this book. It was well written and unlike many stories in this genre it kept me guessing as to who the murder was. I actually enjoyed the way the main characters personal life was examined and worked into the story isntead of distracting from the mystery. I particulalry enjoyed the references to Lornes previous case and the introduction of her shadowy nemisis The Unicorn. The only reason I have rated this book 4 stars instead of five is that as some reviewers have already mentioned there are some sections that are very graphic, and I personally found them a little difficult to read.
