This was still interesting, but feels much more like historical fiction than the first one, particularly the first third. Jenny doesn't feature for much of it, giving great detail to the childhoods and experiences of people she encountered in her work. This felt off for a "memoir" given that there is no indication as to how she came about this information.

I love the BBC production of "Call the Midwife." The historical accuracy, the character development, the touching story lines are all wonderful. The books are very different, although some of the story lines are similar. The books don't develop characters the way the series does. I haven't gotten to know Trixie and Cynthia and Chummy and Fred the same way in the books as on the tv show. But what the books have that the tv series doesn't is more historical background. I love that!
I had no idea about that workhouses in England lasted into the 21st century. This book really opened my eyes to the horrors of the workhouses. The institutions were designed to help those people who couldn't support themselves, but the good intentions were lost in the actualities. Families were separated. Children were forced to work. Beatings were commonplace. Leaving the facilities was difficult at best.
If you love history, you should definitely read this series!

The content was very difficult to get through sometimes but the story is powerfully raw and deeply moving.

Wow.
What a good look at the two World Wars' in Britian. A viewpoint that I've never seen (and I've read a lot of books on these two wars).
It's not what I expected when I picked it up, but I am definately not diasppointed!! Can't wait to read the third book!
