The style of writing and the layout of this book was different to the first in a way that I didn't enjoy as much. Instead of many stories about many different people, this book focused on the lives of just three people. It moved slowly and stiffly and only made me feel emotion in two spots as opposed to the first book which was full of emotion. Stories from the first book stayed with me, this book won't. And I'm not inclined to rush out and read the third in the series but I know I will eventually just to finish them off.
This is the second book in Jennifer Worth’s trilogy based on her experience as a midwife in London during the 1950’s. I enjoyed the first book, as well as the series on Netflix, so was eager to read all of these. I liked the first book a little more as it focuses on the medical and midwife activities where this book is the story of the children who were placed in the local workhouse. It was still a very good read though and I like her writing style. 4.25/5 stars.
Great vignettes! The first book included many experiences of Jennifer Worth as a midwife. I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't even one vignette included in this book about midwifery. Instead, this book was of other people's tales of the workhouse. It was a very good book, don't get me wrong, but the subject matter was different than that included in the first book.
a disturbing, devastating, and incredibly eye-opening account of life in England’s workhouses and their impact on multiple generations
Not as interesting as the first book in the series, but still a powerul read.
A poignant history of 20th century London medicine
In the second book of the Call the Midwife series, Jenny Worth tells the story of the survivors of the workhouses. From several perspectives we hear their poignant stories. You want to hug Nurse Jenny for her compassion toward the lonely veteran. A must read for fans of the TV adaptation.

Beautiful story of poverty and human strength. Manages to make a tragedy-filled time in history resonate with feelings of community, perseverance and unending spirit.
