I did not understand the ending and the characters did not make me want to read any more of the series. I really didn't like it at all.

While this book was meandering and had took some liberties with how it told its plot, I still couldn't help but really enjoy this book.
I think I really like this author. Olivie Blake writes in a style that is unique to her. There are some choices in this book that I haven't seen done elsewhere and I ended up appreciating the prose quite a bit. I'm also reading her Webtoon right now, and it's pretty dang fantastic as well.
This is one of my favorite settings or tropes or whatever in fantasy. The school setting. And while this isn't set in a "school" per se, it is set in a library with a big cast of characters that have to learn to work together or get along with each other. While some characters I liked better than others every single one of them had their endearing moments throughout this story. Ok, maybe not endearing, but their own personal moment of greatness. Which was nice to let each character shine at some point.
The plot of this story is kind of vague though. As we are in the library all we know is that someone is going to have to go home at some point. Then a secret is slowly revealed and then there is a big twist at the end. Which I think is going to open up book 2 more and it will then be more streamlined than this first one.
I don't think this book is going to be for everyone, but I couldn't help but really enjoy it. I loved the writing; I loved the characters; I enjoyed the plot twist at the end (which if you're paying attention I think you could sorta figure it out). I am super excited for the sequel and Olivie Blake is an author that I'm going to be keeping an eye on in the future!
