While this book was meandering and had took some liberties with how it told its plot, I still couldn't help but really enjoy this book.
I think I really like this author. Olivie Blake writes in a style that is unique to her. There are some choices in this book that I haven't seen done elsewhere and I ended up appreciating the prose quite a bit. I'm also reading her Webtoon right now, and it's pretty dang fantastic as well.
This is one of my favorite settings or tropes or whatever in fantasy. The school setting. And while this isn't set in a "school" per se, it is set in a library with a big cast of characters that have to learn to work together or get along with each other. While some characters I liked better than others every single one of them had their endearing moments throughout this story. Ok, maybe not endearing, but their own personal moment of greatness. Which was nice to let each character shine at some point.
The plot of this story is kind of vague though. As we are in the library all we know is that someone is going to have to go home at some point. Then a secret is slowly revealed and then there is a big twist at the end. Which I think is going to open up book 2 more and it will then be more streamlined than this first one.
I don't think this book is going to be for everyone, but I couldn't help but really enjoy it. I loved the writing; I loved the characters; I enjoyed the plot twist at the end (which if you're paying attention I think you could sorta figure it out). I am super excited for the sequel and Olivie Blake is an author that I'm going to be keeping an eye on in the future!

THIS IS NOT A STANDALONE BOOK.
You ever hate-read something? I didn't hate this book but I certainly did not enjoy it - but I couldn't out it down in some vague hope that it got better. All the characters are horrid, horrid people, except possibly Libby and Nico. They're vapid, egotistical, physically beautiful idiots, many with privileged backgrounds. You eventually learn their tragic backgrounds but it did very little to warm me up to any of them. This is like if X-Men were in an academic Hunger Games, which is a fascinating, interesting concept, but you can't stand any of the characters. The magic isn't really magic, it's science fiction and academia. And even though they're in competition to make the Society of this great magical library, the magic of the library makes no appearance, you get no solid feel for WHY access to its knowledge is worth them killing people over. This book is 100% telling and 0% showing, one of my biggest fucking pet peeves. Instead, you get to live each chapter in these horrid people's heads where they TELL YOU how they deduce, grow, change, etc. but you NEVER see it. I'm growing more mad that I spent today reading this as I type.
But, hey, there's a fucking threesome in it that's uncomfortable because it doesn't feel consensual.

This was an excellent read. The way the story unfolds was so captivating. I had no idea what to expect at any moment. I’m thrilled to keep reading.
