Poor Folk

Fyodor Dostoevsky

Just gotta love some of the reviews here (sarcasm font), which seem to want Dostoevsky to write as if he existed in 2015 instead of 1846. Please, get some background to literature at that time in Russia and Western Europe, and maybe the history of the epistolary novel as well. First novel - place in Dostoyevsky's overall oeuvre. Some of these "reviewers" claim that Fyodor is their favorite writer and they have read just about everything by him. Well, then they should know there is a great difference between his writing Pre and Post Siberia. And that much of his earlier writing is very much of the time and place (Russian Literature), but still groundbreaking. Yes, after this readers and critics were declaring they had a new Gogol - and then he dropped "The Double" on them. Which is much more in tune to his later writing, and just about a 180 degree switch from this and the short stories he was writing at the time. Just for a quick example, Pre-Siberia is short works, Post-Siberia is thick, dense tomes. Geez, open your vistas and don't go placing everything in your own little "today".

The was my first Dostoevsky. And as a beginner, not an intermediate reader, here is my hot take.

I see this is acclaimed for being a humanitarian look into the life of impoverished people prior to the Soviet regime. That's a whole thing. I mean, that aspect is sort of nice to learn about. It definitely hits on struggles and I empathize with that.

However...

Makar gives ✨creep✨ Even as someone poor, he still has power over varvara, in that he is a man. And she is very isolated. And it's almost like he targets her. To me, this isn't a love story. It almost felt like grooming? The author does not explicitly state ages, but it definitely gives the impression that Makar is significantly older.

Please don't @ me with "oh, he's a man of the time." I hate that argument
