This book is as enjoyable as the first time I read it 8 or so years ago. A fantastic start to a fantastic series. Cressida balances humor and absurdity and thrilling plots and character growth and a world drawing on our fascination of dragons so well. Several elements are a little simple, as one would expect from a children’s series. Particularly a lot of the dialogue and the parenting. However, Cowell plays so well to the format.

It was very cute.

The plot was very different from the movie, but both were age-appropriate, I felt.

David Tennant was an excellent reader for this. The brogue really added to the atmosphere.

This book was great, lighthearted and funny. However, the movie and the book are quite different in the plot and other things , but they still managed the overall important thing that makes this story great: the feel/tone.

It was a quick refreshing read that is really hard to describe. The book and the movie both work well together and separately. In my opinion I like the movie better but only because it was more of a dramatic jump for hiccups and the tribes lifestyle.

Also toothless was completely different, movie toothless was more loveable (except the AWFUL habit moviemakers have of making ALL animals act like dogs!!). Book toothless was way more realistic and true to form. He/she? also was pretty funny and really helped make up the good stuff about the book. The book feels like stuff is missing, but I guess that because we have sequels 🤷🏻‍♀️.

“This is the story of becoming a hero the hard way”

“Oh, peace I think. ... I’m still going to kill you though”

“Yell at it”
