I listened to The Bear and the Nightengale. It showed up in my Cloud Reader's library, as well as being recommended by a Facebook friend. I must say that I was captivated by the narrator, Kathleen Gati, in the first paragraph. The fantasy is set in Russia and Ms. Gati gave us a bit of a Russian accent in addition to perfectly pronouncing the myriad of Russian names. But enough about the narrator, although I can recommend listening to this book if for nothing else.
I am not sure why the Goodreads notes on the book reference three other fantasies, only one of which I have read, The Night Circus, and quite liked. This book spins a tale of the lives of a couple of very atypical women from the 12th century. It tells the friction between fathers, or all males, and especially rebellious girls. It elucidates the subservient position in which women are kept by men. It speaks to the continuing friction between the monumentally arrogant Christians and the believers in the old ways (perhaps pagans although I really hate to use that word in this context as I believe it has negative connotations I do not wish to conjure.)
After completing The Bear and the Nightengale am not listening to the second of this trilogy. I also plan to read a print copy and see if it is the narrator that makes the book so engrossing.
I have already recommended this book to several of my friends, I will not recommend it to you.

Liked the time and place of this story however, fantasy just isn't for me.

Imagine this being your debut novel... INSANE
Aw, man, this book was beautiful! This is how you write a story based on Russia (yes, I'm looking at you, Grisha Trilogy). As a Russian myself, I want to applaud the author for perfectly capturing that fairy tale-ish feeling.
I got swept away by this book in an instance. From the first sentence, it reads like some old Russian story your grandmother could tell you on the cold nights whilst the wind howls outside. The characters, the setting, the dialogues - everything was on point. But I have a slight issue with the relationship between Morozko and Vasya. I do like them, but I think that they progressed too quickly for such short amount of time they actually spend together.
Overall, highly recommend. I will definitely be reading the sequel.
