Real score 2.14. I’m sorry, but I’m just so frustrated because even though this touches on it, no one and nothing in all this endless pursuit for finding a solution to my personal problem really GETS what it is to to be a permanent night shift worker and the little ‘touches on’ are even worse than not addressing it at all. Usually along the lines of: oh well, night shift work will kill you, but why don’t you take some of these ideas and work out how to fit them into your completely displaced life. And before you ask, no, I can’t do day shifts, it’s worse (for me), and I can’t go back to a rotating night and day shift because it’s worse again, and I’m too old and miserable to write a decent CV to get a different job that pays as magnificently. I’m trapped. I’m taking it out on this book. That said, it may be great for you.

Haven’t rated it yet because I haven’t tried the techniques. However it reads well enough.

I read this in tribute to the recently deceased author who was a charismatic, wonderful human being, a great broadcaster and commentator, and an accomplished medical professional. Very sad he died so suddenly and prematurely.
Sleep is an issue I have been battling with since having children. It never used to be a problem for me, but since having very screamy babies who only ever slept in fits and starts (especially the firstborn), I have become a light sleeper who struggles going to sleep and more importantly, staying asleep. I have tried many of the conventional tips already (pertaining to caffeine, no drinking anything past 8 pm to avoid toilet needs during the night, exercise, magnesium etc), but it was really good to revisit some of these in such an accessible, succinct style, and I think I am going to book mark his website for quick reference, too. Also, now that he has died, it was really comforting to hear his lovely voice again - he will be much missed, not only by his family, but by everyone who used to listen to or watch his programmes.

I’m keen to give some of these tips a go. Been an Owl for years and struggled with weight, so if I can bring some healthy changes as a result of this book that would be great.

This book really had me intrigued as sleep has been a challenge for me. The concepts had some merit, though this did not really complete the process for getting better sleep. Disappointed.
