For a bunch of relatively unknown characters, their stories throughout were well thought out and fun to read. A welcome return from the previous disappointment.

Gaiman is great at short stories and I imagine he likes reading them too because this volume is a love letter to that form and its masters, from Kipling to Lovecraft to Chaucer. And what a tease at the end! You know there's something big going down when you get three double-page spreads in a row.

Wow. Stories within stories within stories.

Manche Geschichten waren interessant, andere nicht. Ich mag die Idee des Gasthauses.

You know, I can understand why this book is part of the Sandman universe. But I did not like it much. I'm sorry, but I just really wanted more of Dream and his story, not all these strangers. I know he showed up every now and then, giving us a little reminder that yeah, this IS his story still. But it wasn't enough.

Don't get me wrong, I think Neil Gaiman is an absolute genius when it comes to storytelling. And I think all of these short stories stand wonderfully on their own. But my god did I not want to read them. I may have liked them more if I were reading a book specifically dedicated to short stories within the Sandman universe. And I'm sure these short stories will also play an integral role in whatever happens in the next couple of volumes, because that's something I noticed with volume 6, which I also didn't care much for for similar reasons. But I just wanted another volume like volume 7, which I REALLY liked. And I didn't get that, so I honestly got pretty bored.

I hope volume 9 gives me that same thrill that the earlier volumes gave me. I never rate Gaiman books this low.
