Outdated and a bit insulting!

We called this the Bible and referred to it frequently. Not so much for the "your child should be able/might be able to, etc. but for the symptoms of illnesses and to answer the question "She's doing x, is that normal or should I be worried?"

A great resource for new parents. Tons of info before having baby and the first few months were the most useful- I feel like you get the hang of it after a few months and I didn’t necessarily need the book after that. Would have preferred the common illness/injury/when to call the doctor section to be at the beginning of the book since it would’ve been helpful during that first cold etc early on. A big index at the back is great for quick reference, too. Each month has what to expect, general guidelines, common questions, etc.

This is a must have for a first time parent. It is more of a reference book than a cover to cover read. Well worth it. My new baby shower kit gift item.

Lots of information. But a little repeat-y sometimes (mostly because many of these things have time ranges that span multiple months)

This is a guide packed full of information, and it helped with a lot of questions I had. Some of the science is a little dated at this point.

(summer 2003) great for the mainstream parent but biased against alternative parenting practices such as cloth diapering, extended nursing, and sleep-sharing.

Not through the first year yet, but I didn't really find anything that helpful in the book. I think a lot of it has to do with looking for books that fit specific issues you face in the first year (eating, sleeping, teething, etc..) that this book is just too general to address these issues. I found other authors that I was more drawn to.

This wasn't very useful for me - the first chunk of the book is all about baby gear, which seems out of place in this book and would have been more useful in the book about preparing to have a baby. I also didn't learn much from the developmental milestones chapters and we learned more about baby care from our hospital's prenatal classes than I did from this book. Anyone who cares enough about this stuff to read this has likely already learned all of those things from pregnancy apps, other books, or by doing a basic google about what to do with a baby. I wish I'd skipped it.
