Such a sweet and delightful story about a squirrel and his girl and how love and hope are possible. The only negative is that the mother is awful through most of the book and I skipped one chapter in which she is truly terrible. Chapters are short and there are many pages of illustrations. Note: the Disney+ movie is loosely based on the actual book - there are a lot of differences.

Eliana’s review: “The naughty mother is the only thing I didn’t like about this book.”

This is a beautiful story of friendship and love between a small group of strange people. And I mean strange in the best sense of the word because, as Ulysses asks himself at one point, "Was Flora strange? He supposed so. But what was wrong with that? She was strange in a good way." Flora is strange in a beautiful way. I love her so much. Her mother may think her too strange, but her best friend, the 'superhero' squirrel Ulysses, knows better. His poem "Words for Flora" moved me to tears and I am not at all ashamed to admit that. There are so many beautiful moments in this book. The illustrations are fabulous. I highly recommend it.

Read for class. Absolutely loved the story and the illustrations. I recommended this book to my little brother (9) and he loved it as well.

What a very peculiar story. I expected more from DiCamillo so I was disappointed.

I did not like this book. I wanted to like it. I enjoyed the "big word" vocabulary. But I did not enjoy the writing style full of short choppy sentences (like I am using in this review). I didn't like characters except for the dad, Mr. Buckman, who had a sense of humor.

The mother treated Flora rudely and unkindly throughout the book and said she wanted a "normal daughter" who had lots of friends and then suddenly at the end is worried and sad that her daughter wasn't home in bed and changes how she feels??? Trite.

I liked the illustrations and wish it were a wordless book without the mom.
