My experience was very split between the two times I sat down to read. The first time (about the first half), I was engrossed - I couldn’t put it down. However, the second, I struggled to follow the storyline and couldn’t get my head all the way in. I didn’t get lost in the story like I did in the first half, and was more aware of my progress and position with regard to the end. However, the pace remained despite my detachment.

I expected to enjoy this novel more than I did but it was an interesting read nonetheless and I finished it very quickly. I felt a lot of empathy towards the main character as a woman essentially lost in so much of her life. Certain scenes were difficult to read but so well written and encapsulating. I thought the language was good at keeping attention yet left me in a bleak mood.

I am so sad I never wrote a review as soon as I finished this book because I had so much to say both whilst reading it and at the end.
I remember that I really enjoyed the book and although it took me sometime to understand and learn about Maria through her somewhat jumbled prose, by the end I found myself more and more intrigued by the sadness and intelligence of her character. I saw some of myself in her flaws and, although that is not the most flattering realisation, reading this book allowed me to observe and reflect upon the messy tangle of womanhood, mental illness and addiction that Maria and no doubt so many women at some point uncover in some way within themselves.
I will one day re-read it and hope to rediscover my initial reflections on the book.

Easy book to get through physically, but  simultaneously never-ending mentally. The vague story-telling makes the specific circumstances Maria is in more relatable and imaginable for the reader. I cannot get over how much I love the formatting of this book. The story and characters never leave my mind. The only thing stopping me from rereading this atm is my assigned books for English.

In Play It As It Lays, Joan Didion gives us Maria Wyeth, who may be the cool, disaffected heroine of the 20th century. Dark and moody, yet strangely glamorous and chic, the novel keeps the reader at the same distance its protagonist seems to maintain from everyone in the book. Still, the book is worthy of the acclaim it continues to receive.
