i thought this was very beautifully written and i loved that it didn't focus as much on the apocalyptic nature of the situation but on how people are supposed to live their lives knowing that it is bound to happen. the subtle references and implications of different timelines also brought intrigue that wrapped up nicely at the end. a lovely read.

I wanted to like this book more than I did, but I really couldn’t seem to love it. It just didn’t grab me as much as I would have liked. I’m not even sure why. I liked the story, it was sufficiently weird for my tastes, but every time I read a few pages, I didn’t have the inclination to keep reading, so it took me a few weeks. I guess I’m kind of like Hilda in that regard.

I really enjoyed this book. It took me awhile to get through it though. I did struggle with keeping the characters straight. Jumping back and forth got to be a little bit stressful however the story was beautiful otherwise.
This book is supposed to be about the end of the world. But even after finishing it, I’m not sure. That’s just how peculiar it is. I also found aspects in the story unbelievable. For example, a cat lives in both Berlin and Canada, and a daughter with a good relationship with her mom ignores her mom’s constant calls for two weeks. Despite the book’s oddities, I found it interesting how each of the characters reacted after learning the world was ending right after Christmas. Some wanted to get busy with tasks they had been putting off, others wanted to become better people, and there were a few who didn’t believe the end was coming. I read where the author was trying to write a book about death that was “cozy, comforting, and funny.” She missed the mark for me. I give it 2.5 of 5 stars.
