My Synopsis. MC Ava is a product designer at an IKEA-type furniture company. Her workplace is a bit culty, despite this, she is devoted to her design work. Maybe a bit too devoted, ever since her girlfriend died in a car accident a few years ago. Things start to change when Ava develops a relationship with her new charismatic boss, Mat. This book is part romance, part suspense novel and I don’t think I should say much more about the plot than that!

My Thoughts. I really enjoyed The Very Nice Box, it’s written in a quirky style and is wryly funny. This book covered so many topics including sexism in the workplace, terrible workplace culture driven by capitalism and pseudopsychology, grief and loss and more. Overall, it was such a unique, compelling book! At times, I had no idea what was going on, but in a good way. The last 50 or so pages of this book resolve the story so well and I found the ending to be perfect!

Pretty MFA-y and then completely unhinged. The whole time reading was me yelling at Ava that Mat was BAD NEWS. The unhinged part was the best part but it was only about three pages.

Had a hard time with this one. It was the first book I've read by writing partners.
2/3 of the book felt like a different genre (like a tacky romance). It was difficult to understand the main characters personality or decision making process. I knew there was a twist coming so I kept reading and I enjoyed the last few chapters. I did guess the 'twist' early on but it still felt interesting.

I had such an amazing time reading this - literally could not put it down. I was scared by how much I could relate to the chatarcter - thinking about time in units is an I genius idea!!! The mystery in the book is engaging - though I am super proud of figuring it out before it was revealed. I would love to read a prequel about Andy and the main character- they seem like a couple!!

I think I read the last 200 pages of this book in two days, I couldn't put it down. I loved the crazy change in pacing and how tense it was getting, and the twist was pretty great!

- I loved the focus on how therapy speak can promote putting all of the work on other people to accommodate you, that they just need to do the work of understanding what you want instead of meeting them halfway. I also loved how it drew attention to the fact that therapy speak makes these people feel like they are taking the higher ground and bettering themselves, all while putting others down.

- I loved the absurd corporate culture of STADA with mandatory self-reflections and color coding your work personality. I just loved it loved it loved it all.

- The only thing keeping this from being 5 stars is that the romance is just blatant instalove. There is zero chemistry and then bam they're in love. It is not remotely believable and kind of taints the rest of the book.
