My edition of the audiobook had a rather lengthy introduction about the author and his status as a Nazi sympathizer, so I think I was biased against this book from the very beginning. Aside from the fact that I spent my entire time listening nervously looking for signs of the author’s political leanings, I found this to be a pretty normal family saga. It didn’t change my life or anything, but it was readable.

Misogynist, racist, fetishization of agrarian life written by a city dweller who clearly had no idea what rural life is actually like (contrary to the claims of the introduction). Entirely unsurprising that the author was a Nazi supporter. If you want to learn about rural life or frontier life, read Jack London, Willa Cather, and Pearl S. Buck. They all did it better.

Also, for some reason the narrator gave several characters Irish accents. Confusing.
