3.5 stars. I'm sorry to say that I loved the previous two books more than this one. Curt was very whiny and insecure and it took a lot away from the story. It was a good thing Jack's character was so awesome, that he made up for it somewhat. Though his obsession with baseball got a little old after a while. I thought this book was a little too drawn out with not as much happening but I still got into it and was smiling like a loon at the happy ending.

Also, I have to add that this was an audiobook for me and the narrator Tyler Stevens has been just amazing in this entire series!

I liked this much more than I thought I would, based on reviews, so I was pleasantly surprised. I loved Jack and Curt, although I didn't quite get Curt's self esteem issues. I think I'm also starting to really dislike authors who only give one pov. I want to see both, especially with a character like Jack, who seemed fairly open, but you could tell there was more under the surface.

Plenty of people had issue with the whole Paul thing, and while I do get it, I also got that Curt and Jack were still pretty much just friends who fucked. They weren't committed or anything. If anything, I thought it was most unfair to Paul, for Curt to keep the guy on the hook, when he wasn't really even that into him.

One big pet peeve was the author's use of the word "member". It was especially annoying considering the story was first person, what guy, ever, thinks of a guy's dick as a "member"?

Also, I felt the ending was WAAY too rushed. We have some drama over perceived cheating, and it all gets resolved in a couple of pages. I thought we at least needed a whole chapter of "I'm sorry", and forgiveness and makeup sex.

One of my favorite m/m stories is Peter and Jay's in Better Than Chance - this one fell short. I too agreed with Curt in wondering what Jack saw in him. Very little angst or feels. I need Peter and Jay part 2 instead!

Age gap, opposites attract, and what I did really like was the realistic doubts and fears, not amped up too much, but I got why they would be worried that it wouldn’t/couldn’t last. I might try more in this series . . .

I wanted to give this book three stars because of the inconsistent accents in the audiobook. However, I decided to give four stars because the story is actually good. I enjoyed learning about Jake's history. If you do check out this book, I wouldn't recommend the audiobook. I don't blame the narrator but the accents need to be better. It was hard following along with Jake's accent changed to deep Southern accent every other chapter.

Re-listened to June 27-28, 2021.

Wow! It’s been almost 6 years since I first listened to this.

Things that irritated me:

1. Curt didn’t seem so flamboyant and effeminate in previous books so I’m not sure why it was turned up to a 10 in this book.
2. I really would have loved to hear Jack’s part of the story - only having Curt’s POV felt half-baked
3. I get that Jack is from the south and that honey can be frequently used as an endearment - it just seemed out of character for Jack to use this word.
4. After you agree not to see any other people and then you forget to inform the other people who say hey I want to see you when I get back….that’s no low self-esteem, that’s being passive aggressive.

After this second listen, I downgraded my rating to a three.

Yes, there are some miscommunication and the matter with Paul is objectionable but I think that those ins and outs are quite realistic and consistent whit the characters.

Concerning the MCs, I feel that Curt is a work in progress, he's still growing up and his insecurities are annoying for moments. But Jack, oh my, I love Jack and I find his issues completelly reasonable.

I really, really hope there is a sequel or short story revisiting these guys.
