Such a slog after the gripping first 1/3. I felt like no payoff could be worth the work I was putting in to this thing

I have a goal of reading at least one classic a year. I'll admit I was a little worried considering this book is 1065 pages long and I tend to read fast-paced stories no more than 400 pages. But, yeah, The Count of Monte Cristo did not disappoint.
Despite there being, again, over one thousand pages, I was not bored for a single second. The world and characters are rich in history and detail, and every seemingly random story had a purpose even if it didn't become clear until several hundred pages later.
The drama was great, like, tv-perfect plot twist after plot twist. Characters were dying, going missing and coming back, secretly related to one another, etc. I ate that up.
As for the revenge portion of this tale, I enjoyed it much more than other revenge stories, because The Count gets his revenge!
This feels very much like a summer read for anyone wanting to dip their toes into the classics. The page number is daunting, but the story flies by, I promise. Pick it up, go on a treasure hunt, and witness some tasty, tasty revenge.
