I don’t think of myself as one to gush over tear jerking romance in books, I’m drawn to raunchy, explicit enemies to lovers romance novels that make me laugh and are dripping with steam.
I read this series of books out of order. I started with #3, which brought the spice and I enjoyed the story. I kept thinking about the world it was built it so ended up reading the first one. Again, great spice, the banter was okay (not bad), but overall, I liked the series.
I decided to round it out and read the second book.
I would have finished it in a day if it weren’t for the fact that I had to put it down because it made me cry. Halfway through I had to set it aside. Normally the mushy bits of books just don’t get to me, but the heartache in Keeley and Alaric’s story hit me hard. I’m writing this now, 90% done, crying in a Starbucks at 9AM because I figured I’d finish it quickly and didn’t expect to be gutted by the end.
Is this a masterpiece of writing? Not really. Is this story gutting me to pieces in public? Absolutely.
I’m dreading finishing the book because I love feeling this way about a story but I can’t continue to read it in public because I’ll be sobbing like a baby.
If you like steamy open door romance books in the Scottish Highlands a found family, a bit of an easy plot to follow along with, delicious steam and will tug on your heart strings, read this. Be warned though, as I usually just roll my eyes at the mushy parts, you might get a bit emotional reading this one.

“Leave off,” he snarled, his eyes never opening. “I’ll not aid you in taking me to hell.” “’Tis hell you’re going to if you don’t stop being difficult. Now move!” To her surprise he grumbled but rolled as she pushed him. “I always knew there would be women in hell,” he muttered. “’Tis only appropriate that they should be there causing as much difficulty as they do on earth.”

The second installment in Maya Banks new McCabe Trilogy is even better than the first book. In Bed with a Highlander, book one in the series was a fantastic book but when I read Seduction of a Highland Lass it took my breath away.

“I know you told me not to kiss you, lass, but I should warn you that I’ve never been good at taking directions.”

In the last book Alaric McCabe had agreed to marry Rionna McDonald so that their clans can form a sold alliance for the upcoming battle against Duncan Cameron. On his way to ask for her hand in marriage Alaric and his escort are ambushed; after suffering a deep wound in his side he realizes all of his men are dead and does the only thing he can do, he runs. Keeley an outcast of the McDonald clan is going about her daily tasks when a wounded warrior literally falls off his horse at her feet. While she is nursing him back to health the cottage is taken over by Ewan McCabe and his warriors. He gives her no choice in the matter and brings her back to his keep to further tend Alaric.

“’Tis unseemly for a man to have such beautiful hair,” she murmured. He levered up and scowled down at her. “ ’Tis unseemly to tell a man he has beautiful hair.”

I really felt sorry for Keeley, she’s had to suffer for a crime she didn’t commit and when the McCabe’s offer her a home she jumps at the chance to have a clan again. She also finds herself strangely attracted to Alaric but soon finds out he is to marry her childhood friend, so she is determined to keep her distance with Alaric much to his disappointment. He’s never met someone like Keeley but knows he can’t get attached to her because the weight of the McCabe clan is on his shoulders. However the attraction between them is impossible to fight and they soon find themselves sneaking into each other’s bed chambers every night. But when the time comes Alaric finds that giving up Keeley is one of the hardiest things he will ever have to do.

“My warrior,” she murmured. And he smiled. Aye, just as she was his angel.

I’ve loved Alaric since book one, he’s been my favorite and after reading this book I love him even more. This is fast becoming one of my favorite Highlander series of all time. Paranormal Romance lovers will adore this book!

The titles for this series are killing me. Just sayin'. Now on to the review--I enjoyed this book better than the first one in the McCabe Trilogy. I'm still trying to figure out why I'm enjoying these so much--there's a lot of predictability and characters acting out of character for the times (whatever those times may be, Banks didn't define a time frame and that's smart of her). I think what really appeals to me is the romance--these books are totally and unapologetically romantic and I love that. There's also an old-school feel to the writing and the story that I enjoy. So four stars for the book--and a perfect ten for Alaric. ;)

This 2nd one was not good. There was not much of a storyline--just the main characters having a lot of sex and angst. The best thing about this book is that we got to see Ewan and Mairin from the previous book.
