Andrew Mayne thrusts you into the mind of a scientist, and reading these books are more than just solving mysteries. You learn and hear a lot about science and technology that is perhaps "over your head," and a bit unbelievable (some may actually be so!), but entirely interesting and almost-believable. And Dr. Cray is a really likable oddball.

Really a 3.5 for me.
I liked this book, but not as much as the Naturalist. Theo Cray has started working with a new intelligence company after his run-in with Joe Vik, damaging his chances at being a college professor ever again. He is asked to look into a ten-year cold case of a missing young boy, and quickly notices a pattern with other young missing boys. Through the help of an eyewitness, Artice, and his own inquisitiveness and desire to do whatever is necessary for catching the bad guy, Theo continues to put his life at risk while hunting a predator. What will this latest crime solving spree do to his reputation?

SpoilerI really disliked the ending and thought it was unrealistic. I don't think Theo would become a killer even after his situation with Joe Vik. I think the stint in the jail is believable, but not up and shooting a guy straight in the head without calling the cops, and then getting let off the hook. Is it justice for the families to have him dead, or would they rather him go to trial and be jailed/in solitary/something else (I acknowledge this would be a challenge to get to that point because of the people who were protecting him). But I just feel like there were zero repercussions, and I understand it was a child predator, but he had zero qualms about killing him? This didn't feel like the same Dr. Theo Cray from the first book, and it really kind of tainted the series for me. I'd like to read the whole series, but we'll see.

Fantastic read. Smart and faced paced . I loved the first novel in the series and was anxiously awaiting the followup. You don't have to read the first book to read this one, but it helps. It will help you to get to know Professor Cray. Another triumph from the author. Well told, with terrific biological and technical details. Another hunt for a serial killer builds up to an exciting ending. I was a bit confused by the details at the end; the author seemed to gloss over some details that would have helped make sense of everything. Can't wait for the third in the series!

Everything he writes is just really good. Mayne is, in particular, great at mastering pacing. Highly recommend.

A very engaging read, I truly enjoyed the way in which Theo slowly untangles a complex web of lies and deceptions. I don't know how real the science behind the story truly is, but the use done of it is clever, and that's enough for me.

I understand why the end is what it is, I see how it is probably unavoidable, but it still leaves me with a sense of... innocence loss, maybe? Theo is in a darker grey zone now.

But I truly enjoyed the ride, and will hop in gladly into the next book.

Loved it

I loved seeing how Dr. Cray develops and comes off as much more human in this second book. The plot was great - was not expecting where it went. I look forward to book 3!
