This was alright, nothing inherently wrong or bad with the book but I feel like I was a little bored from around the middle point?

DID NOT FINISH

Dnf @15% the main reason was simply tooo many damn pop culture references I HATE pop culture references or anything like saying instagram or snapchat & like fucking adding in real life tv shows & serial killers by name & etc especially when its on every.single.fucking.page. now i can do a few references & yes i still cringe at them but every single page having more than one reference??!!? absolutely not i cant do it. also phoebe was just annoying as hell. cute ass cover though
funny lighthearted medium-paced

Love this book! Even though I found the main character to be not my cup of tea, the author wrote her so well that I could easily overlook her grumpy attitude and paranoia-inducing fascination with true crime. I also loved how the author wrote body inclusivity.

After the death of her father, Phoebe Walsh is forced back to a childhood home she has no pleasant memories of. On her first night there, she encounters a man who appears out of thin air asking if she needs help. With her true crime brain, her first thought is he’s a serial killer. But the more time Phoebe spends at the house, she comes to realize that the man, Sam, is her neighbour… and possibly a good one at that, which frightens her even more. The more time they spend together; the more feelings start to form. This was a good novel, it was entertaining in all the right ways, but it didn’t really wow this reader. The plot was good, it left the reader flipping the pages, but they found it very predictable. There was a third act break up, which we could feel coming a mile away, we knew exactly how this would end, so it just felt like an okay novel. What this reader did like, was the added bits about true crime. Not a true crime girlie in any sense, but this reader found those parts to be so entertaining and really gave us a better understanding as to who Phoebe was as a character. If we’re being honest, she was so unlikeable at the start of the novel. She was bitter, didn’t think she needed anyone, got crabby at anyone who wanted to help her; it was very insufferable to read. Her character definitely did grow and got better by the end. Having her brother who she didn’t really know because she didn’t grow up with him genuinely brought her back down to earth, which was a great contrast and helped mellow her out. Sam also did that, as he is the love interest, but it honestly didn’t work as well as the connection she had with her brother. He brought out the more sunshine to her grumpy. The side characters were where it was at for this novel; her brother Conner and his girlfriend Shani were extremely enjoyable to read and funny, too; her friend Alison felt a little two dimensional in the sense that we barely saw her, it was only when Phoebe needed something did she crop up. Phoebe’s professor/mentor had more personality than Alison, she was an interesting addition, she stood out for how cold she was, yet caring at the same time. Then there’s Sam, who had many, many layers, but also just felt very cookie cutter. He was cute and said all the right things, but he could feel a little too perfect at times. In the end though, that worked for the happily ever after. This was a cute romance, that was very easy to breeze through and enjoy.

Such a fun and different romcom. Could’ve benefited from more of the romance side of the story though
