I found this book to be so boring. I liked the knowledge of Serial killers and her making life comparisons towards some of the things they did but I couldn't make myself finish this book

This is going to sound weird, but I think I was hoping for this book to be a little bit more unhinged than it was. The concept was interesting, the family dynamics were complex and engaging, and the romance was sweet. But I just couldn’t buy that Sam would have ever come off like a serial killer. An elementary school music teacher who lives in khakis? This golden retriever good guy?? Come on. That said, I’m still a bit Alicia Thompson fan.

I loved the blurb for this book, so I thought I'd really enjoy it, but this story and the characters really fell flat for me. I listened to the audiobook and I really loved Lee Daniel's narration though.
I thought about DNFing the book about 40 minutes into it - the FMC, Phoebe, immediately questions whether or not Sam, the MMC, is a serial killer upon meeting him. She was obsessed with true crime in a weird, paranoid way. It is not normal to think your next door neighbor is a serial killer (especially because Phoebe didn't have ANY basis for that claim??) and then watch him and question his every move. That is so weird and at some points, quite stalker-ish? I wasn't really sold on Sam's love for Phoebe. Phoebe was so insufferable. Maybe it's just me being tired of adult characters who act immaturely, but I rarely found myself rooting for her. Go get therapy and develop some self-worth and start holding yourself accountable for your actions.
I'm also not really sure what the plot really was? The story ended up being a little all over the place for me. Ultimately, I think it's about Phoebe processing her trauma and grief and finding out how to open herself up to others, but everything was disconnected for me. We'd go from obsessing over Sam to Conner & Shani to Allison to true crime to her dissertation to her self-loathing. This was my first Alicia Thompson title. I plan on reading another book of hers and I'm just hoping it's better than this one.
