I'm glad I read "With Love, from Cold World" first, since it was much better. This book was "fine". I'd even say much of it was "good", but it gets generic and kinda tapers out. It could have ended half a dozen chapters earlier and been a better story.

Listening to this book, I was thinking how “crazy and unlikely” some of her internal dialog to only realise I share this dialog. No trust. Check doors are locked minimum of 3 times at night and when I am home alone. I enjoyed the book but can’t help by feel the romance was too heavily relied upon for the story line - which I can understand as it is a rom com but I had wanted more substance I guess

Perfect for the off-beat millennial women (or men) with a certain fascination of macabre psychology. The main character and the writing really made this for me, both very fun, witty, and with a great mix of heart and dark flare. I found Phoebe to be very like-minded and someone I easily could have been friends with in real life. The use of pop culture and very specific pop culture with references varying from Paramore to Edgar Allen Poe really hit for me and made me understand and connect with her. I also loved Phoebe's passion for True Crime writing and the deeper perspective around the shape a narrative takes and how that manifests in those consuming it.

I came into this book mildly curious, but feeling it may be up my alley enough for so for the serial killer book element. I largely read books with darker themes and twists, so I think a part of me was thinking this would hit me with a twist like that. It's worth noting it is truly a romance novel with a bit of personal growth narrative, less so a horror book but containing a character very in-tune with horror.

I am quite picky on romance, but this one worked for me and had me rooting for the love story here. I found it highly connective, smart, and bold with ample layers and I also just appreciated we were given a unique, intelligent, passionate lead, who was intuitive and aware, staying true to herself even as the romance blossomed. It's also a relationship with open communication, support, and a true companionship that added to each character's story. The whirlwind romances where lead characters totally forget themselves and everything that was important to them before they met this person really irk me and I'm glad this went the opposite direction.

A 30 year old fat protagonist who's obsessed with serial killers and is struggling with her post grad degree? Shit, wish I'd read this book sooner if I knew it had my doppelganger in it.
