"we need more unlikeable female characters" you guys can't even handle phoebe walsh

This had genuinely funny moments which I always appreciate in a rom-com. I also appreciated the commentary (albeit light and silly) on what someone may be drawn to true crime and how it can negatively affect someone's ability to form personal connections with people. There were a couple of points where I cringed, and I do wish the love interest had felt a little more fleshed out. But I did like that there were other relationships that the main character was trying to figure out in the story (familial and platonic) that were written with depth.

The premise is cute and compelled me to buy this book. Also, props to the cover design by Jenifer Price. It catches the eye and made me ready for a true crime slice of romance. Alas, that is where it ends for me in this book. The protagonist, Phoebe, the love interest Sam and the minor characters are very boring. This was a humdrum of a slice of life and unfortunately, I don't care how many true crime facts you stuff this book with, it is still boring and monotonous. The beginning started out promising, but once I got to 40%, the book was staying the same throughout. It's a shame, cause I thought there was a really obvious tension building we could've got from this book trying to figure out if Sam was a serial killer. I was hoping for more like the movie "The 'Burbs", but instead got a detailed retelling of how they fed a cat and every other mundane activity one does in general.

This was one of those books that had some good and some bad. But here’s the thing … If you can’t find yourself, namely me, remembering the characters when the book is done, then I think it just wasn’t the kind of story that had enough to keep me entertained.

I’m trying to find something else to say and am struggling. The characters were flat, the plot seemed typical, and the ending was predictable.

And that’s all!

I liked it but the dialogue wasn’t realistic.

I just couldn’t get into it, and I have other books I really want to read.
